Instructional Video
Bill Monroe-Style Mandolin
(Murphy Method)
Chris teaches five Monroe-style tunes literally note-by-note: Big Mon, Bluegrass Breakdown, Raw Hide, Wheel Hoss, and also a terrific, bluesy break to Man of Constant Sorrow. Chris teaches the four Monroe compositions very close to the recorded versions — on Wheel Hoss he’s practically mirroring every note of what Monroe played.
These lessons are all taught carefully note-by-note, showing every pick stroke and naming every note, all the way through each tune. No Tab. VHS or DVD.
Private Lessons
Growing up, our family business was music and musical education. I have appeared in many instructional videos and since I was eleven years old. For over fifteen years I have been giving personal lessons.
Whether you are looking to learn acoustic or electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, or bass, I can help you learn by ear, the old fashioned way, with no written material or tablature.
I break down tunes into individual phrases, then teach all the notes to all the licks one-by-one and pickstroke-by-pickstroke, providing all the details to combine the phrases together slowly, then work them up to speed.
Whether it’s learning a blazing instrumental or just learning the chords to your favorite song, I can help you open the doors to musical comprehension, ear training, improvising and theory.
From teaching large workshop classes at folk festivals like The Florida Folk Festival, to the week-long Davis-Elkins College Augusta Heritage camp, RockyGrass Academy, to the prestigious Colorado College, I have lots of experience teaching all ages from children to seniors. I can help get you going in various styles including bluegrass, old-time, country, folk, blues, basic swing, many styles of rock, and more.
